Steubenville (Ohio) grabbed the lead when it ran for a touchdown with 8:00 to go in the fourth quarter and held on to defeat
Morgantown (W. Va.) 20-14 on Saturday. The score was the final lead change in a back-and-forth contest that featured two lead swaps.
The Mohigans pulled ahead on a touchdown pass by
Mark Johnson to
Shane Commodore, and subsequently went into halftime leading 14-6. The Big Red scored the winning points with a touchdown run that came in the fourth quarter.
Chazzy Thomas played well for Morgantown. The junior running back ran for one touchdown. He has now scored 13 touchdowns on the season.
Steubenville went into the matchup giving up only 16.7 points per game. The 14 points that MHS ended with were well below its average of 38.8 coming into the game.
When the two teams played each other last season, SHS came away with a 31-9 victory.
The loss comes after Morgantown defeated Wheeling Park 42-39 last week. The victory was a step in the right direction for the Big Red, which was coming off a 31-7 defeat at the hands of Ursuline in its previous game. The loss snapped the Mohigans' 3-game winning streak.
In its next matchup Morgantown (5-2) will take on John Marshall in a Ohio Valley AAAAA game. The Monarchs enter the contest having posted a 2-4.
