4A Region I District 1 recap Oct. 9, 2012
Josh Torres and Ricky Olivas provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Irvin. The connection went for 79 yards, the longest such play in 4A Region I District 1 this season.
Chapin extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Bowie, 63-7. This was the team's fifth consecutive win.
Torres and Myles Douglas gave Austin a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Torres threw for 259 yards and four touchdowns, while Douglas ran for 169 yards. Olivas also contributed to the rushing game with 49 yards on the ground.
Jeremiah Gomez provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Rockets fell to the Panthers. He completed eight passes for 173 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 110 yards. Gomez's favorite target this week was Jesus Morales, who caught five passes for 121 yards.
Chapin's Seth Gonzalez and Jaylen Addison have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Gonzalez has thrown for 981 yards this season, while Addison, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 36 catches for 506 yards. Douglas from Austin leads the league in rushing with 651 yards.
Two of the top units in 4A Region I District 1 will face off this week when Ruben Batista's team takes on Rene Hernandez's team. The Panthers' offense has scored 145 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while the Huskies have allowed only 88 on the year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Chapin takes on Austin. The Huskies are in first place, while the Panthers are in fourth place.
There should be lots of points scored when Chapin and Austin face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Huskies comes in having scored 134 this season, while the Panthers have scored 145. Chapin scored 63 points last week as it defeated the Bears.
Andress moved up to 751 from 793 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Eagles were able to make the jump by beating Jefferson 55-6.
