Baseball Recap: Mattoon's Victory on Tuesday Extends Winning Streak to Three

Mattoon won the last time they faced Rantoul and things went their way on Tuesday too. The Greenwave blew past the Eagles 12-5. The Greenwave might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matchups by seven runs or more this season.

Zander Piper spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and three unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up six Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Fletcher Gregory, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Mathew Miller, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

Mattoon always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .538. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rantoul only posted an OBP of .267.

The win (which was Mattoon's third in a row) raised their record to 14-11. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.7 runs over those games. As for Rantoul, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-10.

Looking ahead, Mattoon will head out on the road to take on Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Rantoul, they will look to defend their home field on Wednesday against St. Teresa at 4:30 p.m. The Bulldogs have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.17 runs per game on average), something the Eagles will no doubt try to take advantage of.
