The Cape Hatteras Hurricanes suffered their biggest loss since December 7, 2023 on Friday. They were the victim of a rough 57-37 defeat at the hands of Columbia. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Cape Hatteras in their matchups with Columbia: they've now lost three in a row.
Despite the loss, Cape Hatteras still got an impressive performance from Griffin Couch, who scored 13 points along with nine rebounds. That was a full 35.1% of Cape Hatteras' points, marking the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Teigan Augustson, who scored seven points.
Leading Columbia to victory were Jayden Sawyer and Ariyeh Spencer. Sawyer dropped a triple-double on 21 points, 15 rebounds, and ten blocks, while Spencer scored 18 points along with eight assists and six steals. Sawyer is absolutely dominating the block category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Aaron Combs was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with ten rebounds.
Cape Hatteras' defeat was their fifth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 4-11. As for Columbia, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 8-8.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cape Hatteras will face off against Hobgood Charter at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Hobgood Charter focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up seven last Thursday. As for Columbia, they will head out on the road to challenge Bear Grass Charter at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
