The Skyline Spartans are taking a road trip to take on the Redmond Mustangs at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Skyline is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
Skyline is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Washington's top teams: Snohomish, who was ranked 21st at the time (Skyline was ranked fourth). The Spartans took a 13-8 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Panthers on Friday. The Spartans' defeat signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.
Shea Staley and Nazli Chavez did some serious damage despite the final result: Staley scored two runs and stole a base while going 4-for-4, while Chavez went 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Staley is also on a roll when it comes to home runs, as she's now launched at least one in each of the last three games she's played. E Smick also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
Meanwhile, Redmond hadn't done well against Bothell recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Mustangs blew past the Cougars 15-1. The Mustangs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven matchups by six runs or more this season.
Ainsley Barcalow was a major factor no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Barcalow was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Livy Ruess, who scored three runs while going 2-for-3. Maggie Enich was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-5.
Redmond always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .550. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Bothell only posted an OBP of .308.
Redmond pushed their record up to 10-1-1 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Skyline, their loss dropped their record down to 9-3.
Monday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Skyline has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .449. However, it's not like Redmond struggles in that department as they've averaged .500. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Skyline skirted past Redmond 8-7 when the teams last played back in March. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Spartans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
