3A/2A Northeastern Coastal recap Sept. 26, 2012
Northeastern moved up to 72 from 132 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 3A/2A Northeastern Coastal. A 47-7 win over First Flight helped the Eagles improve their standing.
Currituck County was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from seventh to fifth in the league. Earlier in the week, the Knights defeated Southeast Halifax 20-0.
The Night Hawks' offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Nathan Parker threw for 101 yards and Billy Foster had 70 yards receiving. On the ground Alex Monaco chipped in 52 yards. Monaco helped First Flight's passing attack out by catching one ball for 37 yards.
Dennis Mullen made the biggest impact on defense this week as First Flight fell to Northeastern. The 5-foot-10 senior pulled down one interception.
5-foot-8 quarterback David Henne of Pasquotank is the league leader in passing yards this season with 424. He has also thrown one touchdown. On the ground, Jim Prince's team's Wyatt Robertson has rushed for 494 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Foster. The First Flight star has 15 catches for 252 yards.
Two of the top units in 3A/2A Northeastern Coastal will face off this week when the Night Hawks take on the Panthers. First Flight's offense has recorded 125 points this season, making them No. 1 in the league, while Pasquotank has permitted only 149 on the year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Bertie takes on Antonio Moore's team. Bertie is currently in third, while the Eagles are in second.
Holmes extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Hertford County, 27-10. The victory was the sixth in a row for the team.
