Valley Central is 8-2 against Goshen Central since May of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Vikings will square off against the Gladiators at 4:15 p.m. Valley Central is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.
While Valley Central's victory against Cornwall Central wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Vikings narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Dragons 2-1. The victory continues a trend for the Vikings in their matchups with the Dragons: they've now won five in a row.
Emily Sharpe spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on four hits.
At the plate, Valley Central saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mackenzie Hinspeter, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one double.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Goshen Central). Everything went their way against Monticello on Thursday as they made off with an 18-0 win. The Gladiators might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matchups by seven runs or more this season.
Addison Freiberger was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Sophia Springer was a standout: she went a perfect 4-for-4 with three stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Lilah Snyder was another key player, going 2-for-3 with five RBI and two runs.
Goshen Central kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in four consecutive contests.
Valley Central's record now sits at 6-4. As for Goshen Central, their record is now 8-2.
Friday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Valley Central hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .355. However, it's not like Goshen Central struggles in that department as they've averaged .324. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Valley Central came up short against Goshen Central in their previous meeting back in April, falling 6-3. Can the Vikings avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
