The Somerset Eagles will challenge the Bedford Bisons at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Somerset is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.
Somerset is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. Everything went their way against Westmont Hilltop on Tuesday as Somerset made off with a 16-3 win. The result was nothing new for the Eagles, who have now won five games by six runs or more so far this season.
Garrett Reese looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Somerset let Cole Lucas and Zane Hagans run wild. Lucas scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4, while Hagans scored two runs while going 2-for-3. What's more, Hagans posted two doubles, the most he's had since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Max Means, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.
Somerset always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .600. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Westmont Hilltop only posted an OBP of .440.
Meanwhile, Bedford hadn't done well against Forest Hills recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Bedford had just enough and edged out Forest Hills 5-4. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Bisons.
Bedford's victory was truly a team effort as six different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Gaston Watkins, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. Quincy Swaim was another, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
Bedford's win was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 2-1. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 1.5 runs across that stretch. As for Somerset, their victory bumped their record up to 6-0.
Somerset came out on top in a nail-biter against Bedford when the teams last played back in May of 2024, sneaking past 5-3. Does Somerset have another victory up their sleeve, or will Bedford turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
