The West Potomac Wolverines will challenge the Alexandria City Titans at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have had a bumpy ride up to this point with five consecutive losses for West Potomac and three for Alexandria City.
For some reason, the away team has come away with the win the last seven times West Potomac and Robinson have met, but the home crowd finally got their W on Saturday. The Wolverines fell just short of the Rams by a score of 7-6.
Sabrina Driggers stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: she went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Ashley McGuckin was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
West Springfield hit Alexandria City with a seven-run second inning on Thursday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Titans came up short against the Spartans, falling 10-3.
Maggie Miller was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. What's more, she gave up only three hits, the fewest she's had since back in April.
On the hitting side, Alexandria City saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Hannah Steedman, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
West Potomac's loss dropped their record down to 5-12. As for Alexandria City, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-15.
Alexandria City's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: West Potomac has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 8.8 hits per game. It's a different story for Alexandria City, though, as they've been averaging 9 hits. Given West Potomac's sizable advantage in that area, the Titans will need to find a way to close that gap.
West Potomac might still be hurting after the 15-5 loss they got from Alexandria City in their previous matchup two weeks ago. Can the Wolverines avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
