Sweeny is 8-2 against the Cougars since January of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Sweeny Bulldogs will head out on the road to face off against the La Marque Cougars at 6:30 p.m. Given that both teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this matchup.
Sweeny fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against the Blackcats on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Blackcats by a score of 45-42. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss Sweeny has suffered since November 10, 2023.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Kay'ana Britton, who scored six points along with six steals. She is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 11 games she's played. Emma McCurdy was another key contributor, scoring eight points.
Meanwhile, La Marque's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Tuesday after their ninth straight defeat. They were outmatched by Columbia on the road and fell 58-19. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points La Marque has scored all season.
Sweeny's defeat dropped their record down to 19-10. As for La Marque, they dropped their record down to 4-18 with that defeat, which was their fourth straight on the road.
Everything came up roses for Sweeny against the Cougars in their previous meeting back in January as the squad secured a 68-23 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Sweeny since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
