On Friday, Elmira didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against Troy, but they still walked away with a 43-38 win.
Elmira found their leader in underclassman Mariah Matias, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds. Matias hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Caitlyn Wagner, who scored nine points along with six rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why Troy lost, one person who can't be blamed is Kailyn Sterling. Despite the final result, she scored 15 points along with eight rebounds and four steals. Those four steals set a new season-high mark for her. Katie Lackey was another key contributor, scoring six points along with ten rebounds.
Elmira now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Troy, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-3 record this season.
Elmira will finish 2023 at home by hosting Horseheads at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Horseheads will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps New York Rankings (they are ranked 295th, while Elmira is ranked 112th). Troy is on the road again on Saturday and play against Corning-Painted Post at 9:00 a.m. on December 30, 2023.
