Phoenix Country Day will take on Horizon Honors at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Phoenix Country Day will roll into the contest after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up two runs on Saturday, then bounced right back against Heritage Academy on Wednesday. The Eagles put the hurt on the Heroes with a sharp 13-2 win.
The team relied heavily on Ronnie Ross, who went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. Phillip Kaplan was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.
Phoenix Country Day was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .522. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .300 or higher in six consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Horizon Honors entered their tilt with Camp Verde on Wednesday with four consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with five. They blew past the Cowboys 15-2.
Horizon Honors also got a great performance from Mason Palmer as he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits (and not a single walk).
At the plate, Horizon Honors let Zach Hull and Max Miller run wild. Hull got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three RBI, one triple, and one run, while Miller got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Lucas Holweger, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two RBI and one double.
Horizon Honors' victory bumped their record up to 17-5. As for Phoenix Country Day, they now have a winning record of 12-11.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Phoenix Country Day has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Horizon Honors struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
