Even though the Wirt County Tigers scored an imposing 67 points on Thursday, the Magnolia Blue Eagles still came out on top. Magnolia secured a 73-67 W over Wirt County. The win was all the more spectacular given Magnolia's disadvantage in MaxPreps' West Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 500th, while Wirt County is ranked 72nd).
Wirt County's loss came despite strong showings from Braylan Dawson and Connor Hoover. Dawson scored 19 points, while Hoover scored 18 points along with six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Caleb Axley, who scored eight points.
Wirt County struggled to work together and finished the game with only three assists. That's the fewest assists they've managed all season.
Magnolia's win bumped their record up to 6-9. As for Wirt County, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-8 record this season.
Magnolia won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Shadyside at 7:30 p.m. on February 9th. Shadyside has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 197 points over their last three matches. As for Wirt County, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Ravenswood at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
