Basketball Recap: Stratford Comes Up Short

Stratford lost against Wando two weeks ago, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Stratford Knights had to suffer through a 68-37 loss at the hands of the Wando Warriors. While losing is never fun, the Knights can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 119th, while the Warriors are ranked 21st).

When it comes to explaining why Stratford lost, don't look at Ciara Mustapher. Despite the final result, she almost dropped a double-double with 28 points and nine rebounds. The matchup was Mustapher's eighth in a row with at least 15 points. Another player making a difference was Sydnie Stepney, who posted a point along with 17 boards, five steals, and five blocks.

Even though they lost, Stratford was working as a unit and finished the game with ten assists. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.4 assists per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 10.2.

Isabel Waite was her usual excellent self, going 9-for-12 on her way to 23 points in addition to five rebounds and three steals for Wando. Waite has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 19 times she's played. Mason Byrd also deserves some recognition as she grabbed her first steal of the season.

Stratford has traveled a rocky road recently having lost six of their last eight contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 9-16 record this season. The win (which was Wando's third in a row) raised their record to 21-4.

Stratford has already played their next matchup, a 75-37 loss against Spring Valley on the 18th. As for Wando, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 55-45 defeat against Ridge View on the 20th.
