Cole Semones made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits (and only one walk). Those ten strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run.
In other batting news, Noah Morris was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Another player making a difference was Asher Gatewood, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.
Meanwhile, Great Crossing waltzed into their contest on Thursday with two straight wins... but they left with three. Everything went their way against the Patriots as they made off with a 13-4 win. Considering Great Crossing has won five matchups by more than seven runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Western Hills, Great Crossing also got a great game from a two-way player: Zach Zinger. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Zinger was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Brenton Alcorn, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and four RBI. Cooper Duvall was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Great Crossing always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Model only posted an OBP of .324.
Western Hills' victory was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 14-3. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Great Crossing, their victory bumped their record up to 8-2.
Tuesday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Western Hills has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .493. However, it's not like Great Crossing struggles in that department as they've averaged .488. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Western Hills might still be hurting after the 13-0 defeat they got from Great Crossing in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Wolverines avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
