The Wayne Blue Devils's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their fourth straight loss. They fell just short of Laurel-Concord-Coleridge by a score of 56-53. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat Wayne has suffered since December 21, 2023.
When it comes to explaining why Wayne lost, one person who can't be blamed is Frantzdie Barner. Despite the final result, she went 6 for 10 from beyond the arc en route to 22 points and 1 assist. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Barner has scored all season. Faith Powicki was another key contributor, scoring three points along with two steals.
Even though they lost, Wayne were working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Laurel-Concord-Coleridge only racked up seven assists.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Mallory Eriksen out in front who scored 12 points along with eight rebounds and three steals. Eriksen's trending in the right direction, as she's improved his point production for three games straight. Another player making a difference was Rena Rasmussen, who scored 21 points along with eight rebounds and three steals.
Wayne has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost eight of their last ten games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-12 record this season. As for Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, their victory bumped their record up to 9-6.
Wayne will be playing at home against North Bend Central at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Laurel-Concord-Coleridge will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against Osmond/Randolph at 6:00 p.m. on January 23rd. Hopefully Osmond/Randolph focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 15 on Monday.
