Video: Mac McClung spectacular in finale
Watch the senior point guard improve on his 38-point-per-game scoring average.
The elusive title. The state scoring record. The perfect ending. Mac McClung
couldn't have written a better conclusion to his high school basketball career.
And his large following of YouTube fans couldn't have received a better swan song.
The high-flying 6-foot-2 guard exploded for 47 points with his usual array of spectacular dunks, no-look assists, blocks and buckets, leading Gate City (Gate City, Va.)
(28-2) to a 80-65 win over Lee in the VHSL Class 2 title game Friday night at the Siegel Center on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth.
It was Gate City's first state crown after four other failed appearances in the state finals.
McClung, a Georgetown signee, finished with 2,801 career points, breaking the record of 2,770. Earlier in the season he broke the single-season record for most points previously held by Allen Iverson.
Gate City coach Scott Vermillion won his 400th game with the title. Teammate Zac Ervin
added 26 points and eight rebounds.
McClung finished things with a reverse dunk with 26 seconds to play, to the delight of the crowd.
"It feels like you've finished what you've set out to do," McClung told the Kingsport Times-News
. "When I was in the seventh or eighth grade, (Gate City lost a state title game) and I told coach, ‘We're going to win a state title for you.' "
