Grand Junction Central is headed into Tuesday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their eighth straight game on Friday. They came up short against Grand Junction, falling 7-1.
Grand Junction Central saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tyrus Kellerby, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, Fruita Monument was not the first on the board on Saturday, but they got there more often. They blew past Durango 11-1. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Wildcats.
Gavin Cardoza was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Fruita Monument is undefeated when Cardoza posts two or more runs, but 6-8 otherwise.
In other batting news, Blake Elsberry and Sam Hawkins did most of the damage at the plate: Elsberry went a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Hawkins got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles. Those four runs gave Elsberry a new career-high. Ryan Brackett also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Fruita Monument was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .379. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Durango only posted a batting average of .095.
Grand Junction Central's defeat dropped their record down to 3-14. As for Fruita Monument, they now have a winning record of 9-8.
Grand Junction Central suffered a grim 9-2 defeat to Fruita Monument when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Warriors avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
