This season hasn't been kind to the Geibel Catholic Gators, who are still winless after their tenth matchup. They suffered a rough 73-48 loss at the hands of Monessen on Wednesday. While losing is never fun, Geibel Catholic can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 731st, while Monessen is ranked 236th).
Geibel Catholic's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tommy Kolencik, who scored 20 points along with eight rebounds and six blocks. Those six blocks set a new season-high mark for him. Gary Tarbuk was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with six assists.
Even though they lost, Geibel Catholic were working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Geibel Catholic bumped their record down to 0-10 with that defeat, which was their fourth straight at home. As for Monessen, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 7-1.
Geibel Catholic will head out on the road to face off against West Greene at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. West Greene has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Monessen, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against Jefferson-Morgan at 7:00 p.m. Hopefully Jefferson-Morgan focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 on Wednesday.
