Basketball Recap: Hialeah Gardens Comes Up Short

If Hialeah Gardens was riding high fresh off their 75-39 takedown of iMater Charter last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Hialeah Gardens Gladiators were beaten by the Mater Academy Charter Lions 70-36 on Wednesday. The contest marked the Gladiators' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

Several Gladiators players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Robert Masis, who posted five points and nine rebounds. Masis is on a roll when it comes to boards, as he's now pulled down nine or more in the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Eduardo Hernandez, who earned five points along with five rebounds and four blocks.

Even though they lost, Hialeah Gardens smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 28 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Mater Academy Charter found their leader in sophomore Aheizer Frais, who went 9 for 11 on his way to 21 points and four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Frais has scored all season. Jet Walis was another key player, putting up ten points and four steals.

Hialeah Gardens' defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 7-11. As for Mater Academy Charter, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 12-11.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Hialeah Gardens has already played their next matchup (against Hialeah-Miami Lakes), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. A feisty cat fight is on tap when the Mater Academy Charter Lions take on the Palmetto Panthers at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Mater Academy Charter is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.5 points per game this season.
