After both having extra time off, the Northfield Nighthawks and the Evergreen Cougars will dust off their jerseys to face off against one another at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Given that both suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.
Two weeks ago, Northfield came up short against Mead and fell 55-47. While losing is never fun, the Nighthawks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 91st, while the Mavericks are ranked sixth).
Northfield's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of LaPorsha Allen, who posted 14 points and eight rebounds, and Aliyah Herron, who earned ten points and four steals. Another player making a difference was Kate Snodgrass, who put up three points and six blocks.
Meanwhile, Evergreen lost to Bear Creek on the road by a 53-36 margin last Saturday. The Cougars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Northfield will need focus on slowing down Elle Buenning, one of several Evergreen players who made an impact when they last played. She posted 11 points along with six rebounds and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Addie McEvers, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 11 boards.
Even though they lost, Evergreen smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Bear Creek only pulled down six offensive rebounds.
Evergreen now has a losing record at 4-5. As for Northfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-4.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Northfield has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 27.5 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Evergreen struggles in that department as they've been averaging 26.4 boards.
