Gladewater is 0-4 against Mount Vernon since November of 2020 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. Gladewater fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back victories it seems like their luck might finally be changing. They really took it to White Oak for the full four quarters, racking up a 50-7 victory at home. The matchup was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 29-7.
Nate Smith and Carsin Cooper were among the main playmakers for Gladewater as the former rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries and the latter rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns on only 11 carries. Cooper was no stranger to the big play, taking off on a dash that went for 60 yards.
Gladewater's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB seven times. Leading the way was Jobey Shico and his three sacks.
Meanwhile, Mount Vernon entered their tilt with Pottsboro with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. Mount Vernon came out on top against Pottsboro by a score of 45-38 on Friday.
The match pitted two dominant backs against one another in Dawson Witherspoon and Major Mcbride. Witherspoon had a great game and rushed for 307 yards and five touchdowns while picking up 7.9 yards per carry. Meanwhile, Mcbride was balling out in the loss, rushing for 251 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 12.0 yards per carry, and also picking up 78 receiving yards.
Gladewater has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 3-7 record this season. As for Mount Vernon, they pushed their record up to 7-3 with that victory, which was their third straight on the road.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Gladewater has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 191.6 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Mount Vernon struggles in that department as they've been averaging 184.5 per game. It's looking like Friday's game might have some serious battles in the trenches.
