Softball Recap: Saturday's Victory Is Southwest SD's Seventh in Last Eight Outings

Southwest SD won the last time they faced Monte Vista and things went their way on Saturday too. The Raiders blew past the Monarchs 17-1. The Raiders might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven games by six runs or more this season.

Daniela Nieto and Sophia Borquez were major factors no matter where they played. On the mound, Nieto pitched two innings while giving up just one earned run but no hits. Meanwhile, Borquez struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances. At bat, Nieto went 3-for-5 with seven RBI, one triple, and one double, while Borquez went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Those three hits gave Borquez a new career-high.

In other batting news, Aketzalli Rodriguez was a standout: she went a perfect 4-for-4 with five runs, one triple, and one double. Those five runs gave her a new career-high. Romina Diaz was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Southwest SD kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 19 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in eight consecutive matches.

Southwest SD is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 8-4 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.0 runs over those games. As for Monte Vista, they are on a ten-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-9.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Southwest SD will head out to challenge Sweetwater at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Red Devils' pitching crew has only allowed 3.9 runs per game this season, so the Raiders' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Monte Vista, they will head out on the road to take on Helix at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
