The St. Johns Country Day Spartans will face off against the Fleming Island Golden Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. St. Johns Country Day is coming into the game hot, having won their last three games.
St. Johns Country Day is headed into the matchup after thoroughly thrashing Clay: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that St. Johns Country Day blew Clay out of the water with a 60-17 final score. The Spartans have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won six contests by 27 points or more this season.
St. Johns Country Day found their leader in freshman Kendall Proffitt, who went 12 for 23 en route to 34 points in addition to seven boards and five steals. That makes it 16 consecutive games in which Proffitt has scored at least a third of St. Johns Country Day's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Sophia Mejias, who went 5 of 10 on her way to 15 points and five assists.
Meanwhile, Fleming Island unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell 50-43 to Ridgeview. While losing is never fun, the Golden Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 222nd, while the Panthers are ranked 68th).
St. Johns Country Day will need focus on slowing down Gianna Crawford, one of several Fleming Island players who made an impact when they last played. She went 6 for 15 en route to 17 points and seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Seven Gourdet, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten boards.
Even though they lost, Fleming Island smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've posted since back in February of 2024.
St. Johns Country Day has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 12-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 25.4 points per game. As for Fleming Island, they now have a losing record at 8-9.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: St. Johns Country Day has been crashing the rebounds this season, having averaged 33.1 boards per game. However, it's not like Fleming Island struggles in that department as they've been averaging 25.6 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
St. Johns Country Day didn't have too much breathing room in their match against Fleming Island in their previous meeting back in January of 2024, but they still walked away with a 61-55 win. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Fleming Island's London Jenkins, who dropped a double-double on 25 points and ten boards. Now that she won't be playing on Thursday, will it be easier for St. Johns Country Day to walk away with another win? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
