Melba has gone 8-2 against New Plymouth recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Wednesday. The Mustangs will head out on the road to square off against the Pilgrims at 5:30 p.m. Melba is coming into the contest on a four-game losing streak.
Melba fell victim to Nampa Christian and their airtight pitching crew on Monday. They lost 8-0 to the Trojans.
Melba saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Colter Bodily, who went 1-for-3 with one double. Mike Lester also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for New Plymouth, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. They blew past Vision 12-0 on Monday. Considering the Pilgrims have won five matchups by more than ten runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Marcus Garcia and Blayk Cockerum made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Garcia pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Cockerum tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Garcia has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up a single hit in three consecutive appearances. At bat, Garcia got on base in all three of his plate appearances with three RBI, two runs, and one triple, while Cockerum scored a run while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances. That's the most RBI Garcia has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, New Plymouth got a big performance out of Cooper Shaw, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3. Shaw is becoming a predictor of the Pilgrims' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 5-1 (and 4-6 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Ashton Robinson, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3.
New Plymouth always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .516. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Vision only posted an OBP of .222.
New Plymouth pushed their record up to 9-7 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.7 runs on average over those games. As for Melba, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-9.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Melba has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like New Plymouth struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.2 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Melba took their win against New Plymouth in their previous matchup two weeks ago by a conclusive 10-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
