Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in prep basketball. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2023-24 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Jahvin Carter of
Alcoa is the 2023-24 Tennessee MaxPreps Player of the Year. The 6-foot-2 senior guard led the Tornadoes to a 26-13 record and second consecutive Division I Class 2A state championship.
For the season, Carter averaged 27.2 points, 5.5 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game. He rose to the occasion to help Alcoa repeat, scoring 40 points in a state semifinal win over Ripley and tallying 28 points and five assists in 76-67 victory over Douglass (Memphis) in the title game.
Carter finished his career with 3,116 points and more than 600 rebounds and 500 assists. He signed with Penn State in November over offers from Georgia Tech and Middle Tennessee State.
"He leaves a legacy that sets the standard for decades to come," Alcoa head coach Ryan Collins said of Carter. "It was not only Jahvin's on the court play that lifted our team, but more so his strong leadership presence, poise and ability to breath confidence and belief into others that made such a difference."
