Flint Hill has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on the Maret Frogs at 5:45 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Flint Hill focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 32 on Wednesday.
Last Wednesday, Flint Hill was beaten by Sidwell Friends 84-16. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Flint Hill has scored all season.
Despite their defeat, Flint Hill saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Raigan Mccalla, who scored 13 points along with six rebounds and two steals, was perhaps the best of all. That was a full 81.3% of Flint Hill's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Flint Hill struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only three offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Maret is ranked highly in their home state, and on Tuesday they took on another highly ranked team in the form of Bullis. Maret walked away with an 83-75 win over Bullis. Maret's offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.
Maret's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kennedy Austin led the charge by scoring 27 points along with six rebounds and five assists. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Austin has scored all season. Another player making a difference was London Liley, who scored 24 points.
Flint Hill has not been sharp recently as the team's lost ten of their last 11 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-14 record this season. As for Maret, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 13-8 record this season.
Friday's game will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Mccalla and Austin. Mccalla has been dynamite this season: she has averaged 20.3 points, 2.5 steals, and 12.8 rebounds. For her part, Austin has averaged 15.9 points, 4.4 steals, and 10 rebounds.
Flint Hill was taken down by Maret 58-26 when the teams last played back in January. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Austin, who dropped a triple-double on 14 points, 12 rebounds, and ten steals. Now that Flint Hill knows the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? There's only one way to find out.
