Wilmot and Westosha Central are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Panthers will square off against the Falcons at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Westosha Central took a loss in their last contest and will be looking to turn the tables on Wilmot, who comes in off a win.
On Wednesday, Wilmot needed a bit of extra time to put away Beloit Memorial. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-5 victory over the Purple Knights. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Panthers have posted since May 2, 2024.
Wilmot got a great performance from Logan Hanson as he didn't allow a single earned run over six innings pitched. Hanson also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because the Panthers are 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 1-2 otherwise.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Ryan Watson, who scored two runs and stole two bases. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Preston Jones also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Meanwhile, Westosha Central came up short against St. Joseph on Wednesday and fell 9-6. The Falcons have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Joe Suokko made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Tytus Nichter was another key player, scoring a run while going 3-for-3.
The victory made it two in a row for Wilmot and bumps their season record up to 3-3. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 8 runs in those games. As for Westosha Central, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Wilmot has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Westosha Central struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 6.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Wilmot beat Westosha Central 8-3 in their previous matchup on Tuesday. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Panthers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
