The Piedra Vista Panthers will head out on the road to face off against the Durango Demons at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Piedra Vista has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
Piedra Vista scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Friday. They came out on top against Miyamura by a score of 48-36. Given Piedra Vista's advantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 28th, while Miyamura is ranked 93rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Piedra Vista to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jaime Pierce, who scored nine points along with eight steals. Those eight steals set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Tyra Holyan, who scored 16 points along with six rebounds and three steals.
Meanwhile, everything came up roses for Durango on the road against Cheyenne Mountain last Saturday as the team secured a 34-6 victory. For those curious, yes, that was the biggest victory Durango has managed all season.
Durango can attribute much of their success to Mariah Maestas, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Lilly Fitzpatrick was another key contributor, scoring six points along with five steals.
Piedra Vista's victory ended a nine-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 4-3. As for Durango, they now have a winning record of 4-3.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Piedra Vista have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 29.3 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Durango, though, as they've been averaging only 25 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Piedra Vista was dealt a bruising 46-19 loss at the hands of Durango in their previous meeting back in December of 2022. Can Piedra Vista avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
