Basketball Recap: Orestimba's Luck Changes for the Better on Friday

Orestimba had to endure a nine-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They walked away with a 75-64 victory over the Sonora Wildcats on Friday. The win was all the more spectacular given the Warriors' disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1032nd, while the Wildcats are ranked 450th).

Orestimba's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Rudy Corona, who went 7 of 12 on his way to 20 points and five rebounds. The dominant performance gave Corona a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Mathew Wales, who went 5 for 12 en route to 21 points.

Orestimba smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Sonora only pulled down eight offensive rebounds.

Several Wildcats players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jonathan Curran, who posted 19 points in addition to five assists and five boards. Curran continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Quentin Solis, who went 5 of 12 on his way to 14 points and three steals.

Orestimba's win was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-6 and their overall record up to 6-16. As for Sonora, their record now sits at 15-8.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Orestimba will venture away from home to challenge Ripon at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Orestimba has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Sonora, they are taking a road trip to square off against Hilmar at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Sonora is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.4 points per game this season.
