V Section II recap Oct. 23, 2012
Northwest Christian extended the longest winning streak in V Section II this week by beating Bourgade Catholic, 49-0. This was the team's ninth consecutive win.
Yuma Catholic took down Tonopah Valley 71-14 last week, the largest margin of any game. Kody Hazlett threw for 23 yards and one touchdown, ran for 214 yards and caught one passes for 27 yards in the win.
Tyler Koehler and Alfred Erives gave Arizona Lutheran Academy a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Koehler threw for 130 yards and four touchdowns, while Erives ran for 244 yards. Teammate Kaleb Buchholz added to the ground attack by rushing for 113 yards.
Luke O'Neill provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Scottsdale Christian Academy bested Valley Christian. He completed nine passes for 158 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for 98 yards. O'Neill's favorite target this week was Alex Kaites, who caught five passes for 82 yards.
Jack Otting-Crandall made the biggest impact on defense this week as Tempe Prep beat San Tan Foothills. The 6-foot-1 sophomore pulled down one interception.
Trevor Osborne was the best wideout in the league this week as Northwest Christian defeated the Golden Eagles. Osborne racked up four receptions for 85 yards. Sammy Serwa helped Northwest Christian's passing attack out by catching two balls for 30 yards.
On the ground, the Shamrocks' Hazlett has rushed for 1816 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Osborne. The Northwest Christian star has 27 catches for 576 yards.
Dave Inness' team's Hunter McShanag needs only 47 yards against the Knights next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season. McShanag has rushed for 953 yards on 92 carries so far this year.
A big matchup in V Section II this week will be when Tempe Prep takes on the Crusaders. Thomas Brittain's team is in fourth place, while Northwest Christian is in first place.
Canyon State Academy made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 13,039 from 13,158. The improvement came about via a 56-33 victory over the Rams last week.
