Rancho Christian and Rancho Verde are an even 4-4 against one another since March of 2023, but likely not for long. The Eagles will host the Mustangs at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday. Rancho Christian is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last four games.
Rancho Christian is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They were the clear victors by a 25-3 margin over Vista del Lago on Tuesday. The result was nothing new for the Eagles, who have now won nine contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Aj Garza and Cody Horner were major factors no matter where they played. On the mound, Garza tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Horner pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs but no hits. The dominant performance also gave Garza a new career-high in strikeouts (two). At bat, Garza went 2-for-5 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple, while Horner went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cylis Proffitt, who went 4-for-5 with three stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs. With that strong performance, he is now averaging an impressive 1 stolen bases per game. Dylan Cookson was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Rancho Christian always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .646. They are a perfect 9-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, Rancho Verde came into Tuesday's game having lost three straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They walked away with a 6-2 victory over Canyon Springs on Tuesday.
Eli Draper tossed a big game, tossing six innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, David Hernandez and Ethan Montolfo did most of the damage at the plate: Hernandez went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one stolen base, while Montolfo went 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Jacob Cabral, who went 2-for-4 with two runs.
Rancho Christian pushed their record up to 13-7 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.7 runs over those games. As for Rancho Verde, their win bumped their record up to 15-9.
Thursday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Rancho Christian hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .352. However, it's not like Rancho Verde struggles in that department as they've averaged .314. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Rancho Christian couldn't quite finish off Rancho Verde when the teams last played on April 10th and fell 2-0. Will the Eagles have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other baseball content.
