This season hasn't been kind to The Santa Teresa Desert Warriors, who are still winless after their ninth game. Their tough 28-7 loss to Gadsden on Friday might stick with them for a while. Santa Teresa was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 21-0.
Isaiah Ceniceros threw for 69 yards and a touchdown on only four passes. Ardon Luna was his top target, picking up 65 receiving yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Nicholas Vierra threw for 13 yards on four of 11 attempts.
Gadsden can attribute much of their success to Alfredo Andrade, who rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 9.1 yards per carry. Another player making a difference was Alius Soto, who rushed for 65 yards and a touchdown on only eight carries.
Santa Teresa's defeat was their sixth straight at home, which dropped their overall record down to 0-9. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 8-1 Artesia and 6-2 Cobre (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 69.9% over those games). As for Gadsden, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 7-2.
Santa Teresa will head out on the road to face off against Chaparral at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Chaparral comes in on a streak of failing to score more than zero points in their last three games, a trend the team is of course eager to reverse. As for Gadsden, they will be playing at home against Deming at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Deming is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
