The Whittier Christian Heralds's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their sixth straight loss. They were beaten by Maranatha 71-39. While losing is never fun, Whittier Christian can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 849th, while Maranatha is ranked 137th).
Whittier Christian's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Leland Carrido, who scored ten points along with three steals. Carrido is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Robert Sanchez, who scored nine points along with two steals.
Whittier Christian struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Maranatha racked up 22 assists.
Maranatha was led to victory by Harrison Harper and Trevor Cohen. Harper scored 12 points along with five rebounds, while Cohen scored 14 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Harper has scored all season. Dylan Khatchikian was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with five assists.
Whittier Christian bumped their record down to 8-14 with that defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road. As for Maranatha, the victory (which was their seventh in a row) raised their record to 14-4.
Whittier Christian will head out on the road to take on Heritage Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Maranatha, they will face off against Serra at 8:00 p.m. on Monday.
