Basketball Recap: Laguna Creek Comes Up Short

Laguna Creek's tournament run continued when they took on Rancho Buena Vista on Saturday. The Laguna Creek Cardinals took a 65-48 bruising from the Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns. While losing is never fun, the Cardinals can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 700th, while the Longhorns are ranked 229th).

Despite the defeat, Laguna Creek saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Jaylan Virgil went 12 of 28 en route to 33 points. Virgil's evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Jordan Boyce, who posted 12 points.

CJ Aldrich was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 28 points and 12 rebounds for Rancho Buena Vista. That makes it 12 consecutive games in which Aldrich has scored at least a third of Rancho Buena Vista's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Isaiah Justice, who put up 11 points and five rebounds.

Laguna Creek has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-8 record this season. As for Rancho Buena Vista, their record now sits at 10-6.

Laguna Creek didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 56-35 loss against Sacramento on the 30th. As for Rancho Buena Vista, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, an 81-56 defeat against San Joaquin Memorial on the 30th.
