It was a good run, but The Woodlands Highlanders unfortunately witnessed the end of their seven-game winning streak on Saturday. They fell 60-52 to Willis. Yes, you read that score correctly, and yes, they were playing football.
The Woodlands' defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performance. Perhaps the best among them was Mabrey Mettauer, who rushed for 23 yards and two touchdowns, and also threw for 177 yards and a touchdown while completing 84.6% of his passes. The team also got some help courtesy of Patrick Miller, who threw for 209 yards and three touchdowns.
It was another big night for Derek Lagway, who rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns on only 13 carries, and also threw for 383 yards and four touchdowns while completing 82.9% of his passes. Lagway's longest rush was for an incredible 83 yards. Another player making a difference was Jermaine Bishop jr, who gained 255 total yards and three touchdowns.
The Woodlands' defeat dropped their record down to 7-3. As for Willis, their victory was their fifth straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 10-0.
The Woodlands will have plenty of time to ponder what went wrong as they've got a bye scheduled next week. After, they'll take on Spring at 7:00 p.m. on November 10th. Spring will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings (they are ranked 319th, while The Woodlands is ranked 58th). As for Willis, they will be playing at home against Oak Ridge at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Oak Ridge knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past three contests -- so hopefully Willis likes a good challenge.
