The Portal Panthers are still undefeated this season after their match against the Calhoun County Cougars on Saturday, but the Calhoun County Cougars came as close as anyone has to beating them. Portal narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Calhoun County 66-63. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Portal to victory, but perhaps none more so than Marion Tremble, who scored 24 points along with seven rebounds. Those 24 points set a new season-high mark for him. Amir Jackson was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Portal's victory was their 15th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-0. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.3 points per game. As for Calhoun County, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 8-3.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Portal's road trip will continue as they head out to face Statesboro at 7:00 p.m. on December 29th. Calhoun County will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Randolph-Clay at 7:30 p.m. on January 5, 2024. Randolph-Clay will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak.
