The Rise Academy Guardians pushed their score all the way to 60 on Thursday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 64-60 hit to the loss column at the hands of Cristo Rey. Rise Academy was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Cristo Rey apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in November of 2023.
Despite the defeat, Rise Academy had strong showings from Trevonte Atkins, who scored 16 points along with three steals, and Nathaniel Seaborne, who scored 16 points. The contest was Atkins' eighth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Lewis Mallory, who scored seven points along with seven rebounds.
Rise Academy has been struggling recently, as they've lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-7 record this season. As for Cristo Rey, their win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-9.
Rise Academy will be staying on the road on Saturday to face off against Lanham Christian at 7:15 p.m. on January 6th. Lanham Christian will be looking to extend their current ten-game winning streak. As for Cristo Rey, they will square off against New Hope Academy at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. New Hope Academy knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past 11 contests -- so hopefully Cristo Rey likes a good challenge.
