It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Newark had no problem doing just that on Wednesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-1 win over the Yorkville Christian Mustangs. Winning may never get old, but the Norsemen sure are getting used to it with their sixth in a row.
Newark had a slow start but a hot finish: after dropping the first set, they turned around to win the next two. The final score came out to 24-26, 25-16, 25-19.
Rylie Carlson paced Newark's offense, picking up 14 kills. Carlson got some help from Taylor Jeffers and her 18 assists. Jeffers also made an impact serving: she shared the team lead in aces with Heather Buhle, each putting up two.
Newark's victory bumped their record up to 31-4. As for Yorkville Christian, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 14-17-2 record this season.
