Baseball Recap: Wheeler Takes a Loss

Wheeler extended their losing streak to three on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 6-10 in the process. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost an 8-6 heartbreaker at the hands of the River Forest Ingots. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since May 15, 2023, but that streak is no more.

Wheeler saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Vincent Tatttini, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run. Blake Laba was another, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.

As for River Forest, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-6. Eight seems to be a good number for they as the team scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.

On River Forest's side, Sebastian Collazo IV made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He struck out eight batters over 6.2 innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off ten hits. Collazo IV has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and one stolen base. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Walter Jaime was incredible, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of River Forest's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 5-6 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Roberto Herrera, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run and one double.

Coming up, Wheeler is taking a road trip to square off against Lake Station Edison at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Bearcats will need to watch out since the Fighting Eagles have now posted at least ten runs in their last three matches. As for River Forest, they will venture away from home to take on Washington Township at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
