Amato Civitello was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has become a key player for Hamden Hall Country Day: the team is 5-1 when he allows at most two hits, but 4-6 otherwise. Civitello was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one double.
In other batting news, Carlos Reyes made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Logan Charboneau, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for St. Luke's, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Monday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-5 win over Rye Country Day on Wednesday. While the Storm didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-11), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Cooper Acheychek looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Drew Zoccolillo, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Tripp Beasley was another key player, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
St. Luke's hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rye Country Day struck out 11 times.
St. Luke's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-3. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for Hamden Hall Country Day, their loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 7-1 and their overall record down to 9-7.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Hamden Hall Country Day has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.9 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like St. Luke's struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Hamden Hall Country Day took their victory against St. Luke's in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 9-1 score. Will the Hornets repeat their success, or do the Storm have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
