Baseball Recap: Morenci Drops Season-High Score on St. Johns

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Morenci). They walked away with a 9-4 victory over the St. Johns Redskins on Friday. The win continues a trend for the Wildcats in their matchups with the Redskins: they've now won nine in a row.

Jacob Verdugo looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. That one hit allowed gave him a new career-low.

At the plate, Jaymz Guzzo and MJ Aguilar did most of the damage at the plate: Guzzo went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one double, while Aguilar scored a run while going 2-for-2. That's the most hits Guzzo has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Christopher Lopez, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.

Morenci's victory was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-3. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for St. Johns, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-4.

Morenci wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next contest, a 7-6 loss against Mogollon on the 7th. As for St. Johns, they have also already played their next match, an 8-4 defeat against Holbrook on the 7th.
