Softball Recap: Valhalla Takes a Loss

Valhalla had lost four straight at home, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 7-18 to make it five. They fell 5-2 to the El Capitan Vaqueros. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Vaqueros this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 3-0 back in April.

Devyn Mack spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and three unearned) runs on ten hits and racked up six Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Valhalla saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Liliana Moscoso, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

As for El Capitan, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-13 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.1 runs on average over those games.

On El Capitan's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Makenna Burton gave up only one earned (and one unearned) run on six hits and racked up six Ks.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Isabella Farris, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Sofia Simone, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Valhalla will square off against Coronado at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Norsemen's pitchers better be ready for this one: the Islanders have averaged an impressive 6.2 runs per game this season. As for El Capitan, they will face off against Academy of Our Lady of Peace at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Vaqueros are facing the Pilots at the right time seeing as the Pilots are stuck on a seven-game losing streak.
