Basketball Recap: Haywood Snags Ninth Win in Last 12 Games

Haywood won the last time they faced Trinity Christian Academy and things went their way on Saturday too. The Haywood Tomcats managed a 67-62 victory over the Trinity Christian Academy Lions. The win was all the more spectacular given the Tomcats' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Tennessee basketball rankings (they are ranked 108th, while the Lions are ranked 33rd).

Haywood's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Lekendric Phillips, who went 7 for 11 on his way to 22 points and four steals. Phillips has been hot, having posted 18 or more points the last seven times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaybyon Snipe, who posted 14 points and seven boards.

Trinity Christian Academy's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kaleb Williams, who went 8 of 14 en route to 18 points and six steals. Those six steals gave Williams a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Zack Niven, who went 5 for 9 on his way to 16 points in addition to five rebounds and four blocks.

Haywood has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 12 games, which provided a nice bump to their 10-10 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 71.8 points per game. As for Trinity Christian Academy, their defeat ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 13-6.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Haywood will take on Bolivar Central at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Haywood has been dominant on offense recently, having racked up an incredible 212 points over their last three contests. As for Trinity Christian Academy, they will challenge University School of Jackson at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
