After flying high against the Western Reserve Roughriders last Wednesday, the Wellington Dukes came back down to earth. Wellington fell to Monroeville 45-41. It was the first time this season that Wellington let down their fans at home.
Wellington lost on Monday despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Taylor Morris, who scored 20 points along with four steals. Those 20 points set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Brooke Lehmkuhl, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten rebounds.
Even though they lost, Wellington were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Monroeville only pulled down nine offensive rebounds.
Monroeville got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Gabi Cullen out in front who scored 14 points along with nine rebounds. That makes it five consecutive games in which Cullen has scored at least 25% of Monroeville's points. Grace Stieber was another key contributor, scoring 13 points.
Wellington's loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 5-2. As for Monroeville, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-3.
Wellington will head out on the road to face off against Black River at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Monroeville will be home for the holidays to greet Western Reserve at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
