This season hasn't been kind to the Southern Wayne Saints, who are still winless after their seventh contest. They were outmatched by Eastern Wayne at home and fell 56-28. While losing is never fun, Southern Wayne can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 402nd, while Eastern Wayne is ranked 73rd).
Southern Wayne lost on Friday despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Nevaeh Hines-Bass, who scored 12 points along with five steals. Hines-Bass scored a full 42.9% of Southern Wayne's points, the seventh time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Nygeria Thompson, who scored nine points along with 12 rebounds.
Southern Wayne's loss was their fourth straight at home, which bumped their record down to 0-7. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 22.8 points per game. As for Eastern Wayne, the win for they keeps them at an undefeated 8-0.
Southern Wayne will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on East Wake at 6:15 p.m. on January 2, 2024. Hopefully East Wake focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 25 last Tuesday. Eastern Wayne will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Farmville Central at 7:00 p.m. on December 27th.
