It was a good run, but the Moapa Valley Pirates unfortunately witnessed the end of their seven-game winning streak on Thursday. They fell 56-48 to Hurricane. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Moapa Valley came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked tenth in Nevada, while Hurricane is ranked 60th in Utah).
Moapa Valley lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Claire Cox, who scored 17 points. The match was Cox's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Andie Wood was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with three steals.
Addison Crandall was her usual excellent self, scoring 19 points along with seven rebounds for Hurricane. Crandall continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Adalyn Johnson, who scored five points along with six rebounds and five assists.
Moapa Valley's loss ended a seven-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 14-3. As for Hurricane, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-6.
Moapa Valley won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Pinecrest Academy Cadence at 5:00 p.m. on January 12th. Pinecrest Academy Cadence is hoping to put an end to a five-game streak of away losses. As for Hurricane, they will head out on the road to face off against Crimson Cliffs at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Crimson Cliffs focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 22 on Thursday.
