If the Dougherty Trojans were riding high off their 71-50 takedown of the Columbus Blue Devils last Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Dougherty took a 59-48 hit to the loss column at the hands of Monroe on Friday. While losing is never fun, Dougherty can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 60th, while Monroe is ranked 18th).
Dougherty's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Jaion Burns, who scored 12 points, and Jaccoby Barron who scored six points.
Monroe's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Lorenzo Still, who scored 22 points along with four steals. Another player making a difference was Justin Burns, who scored 18 points along with seven rebounds and two blocks.
Dougherty's loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-6. As for Monroe, the win was the 11th in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 13-2.
Dougherty will face off against Early County at 2:30 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully Early County focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 last Wednesday. As for Monroe, their homestand continues as they prepare to take on Calhoun County at 7:30 p.m. on January 15th. Calhoun County knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past seven contests -- so hopefully Monroe likes a good challenge.
