VALENCIA, Calif. -
Saugus (Calif.) had its advantage, which at one point stood at 14 points, drop to 10 before the final whistle blew on a 24-14 victory over
West Ranch (Valencia, Calif.).
After trailing 14-7 at the half, the Wildcats went ahead on a touchdown with 11:00 left in the third. Saugus grabbed hold of the lead when
Chris Hamilton ran for a touchdown with 9:00 remaining in the third quarter, and never relinquished it.
Both teams scored seven points in the third quarter, so the margin remained at seven entering the fourth.
The result came as a big surprise as West Ranch came in ranked No. 367 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for California, while SHS was ranked No. 481.
Zahr Lyttle played well for WR. The senior running back ran for one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to five on the year.
The Centurions' standout player in the win was Hamilton. The sophomore quarterback threw one touchdown and ran for one touchdown. He has now scored six touchdowns on the season.
Saugus came in allowing an average of 21.9 points per game this season. SHS held firm on the defensive front, and kept the Valencia school below the 18.2 points it had been averaging per game.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 35-14 win for the Centurions.
