Baseball Recap: Shiprock Comes Up Short

Shiprock fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Kirtland Central on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Broncos by a score of 10-9. The defeat continues a trend for the Chieftains in their meetings with the Broncos: they've now lost five in a row.

Taylor Hale put in work no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and six unearned) runs off nine hits. Hale was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his six plate appearances with two runs. He is becoming a predictor of Shiprock's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 3-6 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Zack Billy and Dolyan White did some serious damage despite the final result: Billy went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, two RBI, and one run, while White got on base in all five of his plate appearances with one run and one RBI. Billy is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last seven games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Ilyas Marquez, who went 2-for-5 with one run and one double.

Shiprock now has a losing record of 6-7. As for Kirtland Central, the win snapped their losing streak at eight games and leaves them with a 4-12 record.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Shiprock is set to face off against their familiar foe Bloomfield at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Kirtland Central will take on rival Gallup at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
